Need a taxi to the airport? How about a car service for a VIP client or a limo for a special occasion? Choosing an eco-friendly taxi or limousine service gives you the power to minimize harmful emissions when you're not behind the wheel.
In cities like New York, traffic and gridlock are an epidemic. Traditional gasoline powered vehicles emit CO2 and other pollutants as they idle in traffic. Hybrid gasoline-electric cars are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional taxis and livery car service vehicles because they are powered by an electric motor with zero emissions when standing still and at low speeds. On average, hybrids use 70% less fuel than traditional town cars and yellow cabs. A number of taxi and green car services also provide eco-friendly non-hybrid vehicles that run on fuels such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), ethanol and biodiesel. Using these green alternatives is a good way to improve the environment while not sacrificing comfort or service.
Companies such as NYC Green Car and OZOcar offer an all-hybrid fleet of luxury cars, for the traveler who wants to make less of an environmental impact, without sacrificing quality and comfort.
New York City is a leader in the "green-fleet" field, having recently announced that a pilot program with Nissan and NYC will introduce the Nissan Leaf in early 2012 as the first all-electric vehicle in the New York City taxi system. The program will also be addressing the lack of charging stations in the city, a major issue for taxi drivers using the Leaf. Options will be limited, but stations in airport holding lots and some other locations are under discussion.
Hopefully, as alternative fuels become more and more prevalent, hybrid and electric vehicles will continue to replace traditional gas-powered taxi fleets.
