Reduce Carbon Emissions with Carbon Offsets
A carbon offset is a way to help reduce CO2 emissions. Carbon offsets are intended to equalize carbon production around the globe by trading greenhouse gas emissions for environmentally friendly actions. Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent and represent six primary categories of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, perfluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride.
There are two markets for carbon offsets: in the larger, compliance market, companies, governments, or other entities buy carbon offsets in order to comply with caps on the total amount of carbon dioxide they are allowed to emit (according to the Kyoto Protocol). The smaller, voluntary market consists of individuals, companies, or governments purchasing carbon offsets to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use, and other sources.
For example, if an individual wants to offset the emissions from personal air travel, they can purchase carbon offsets to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions.
Do your part to reduce your transportation carbon footprint by driving more economically and purchasing products that can help make your vehicle more efficient. What you can't eliminate, offset by purchasing carbon offsets. The funds typically are invested in programs that help reduce carbon emissions such as tree planting and renewable energy programs such as windmill farms.
