Peer-to-peer car sharing is a new kind of car sharing that's starting to take hold. It marries the premise of traditional car sharing with scarcely used cars already sitting in driveways and parking garages.
How does it work? As a car owner, you sign up and designate when your car is available to be shared. Next, the car sharing company installs a small device in the car that will recognize a key card and keep the car locked with the keys inside. As a car borrower, after you sign up you are given a card that will grant you access to the car you have registered for at a specific time. The company issue gas cards, provide insurance, and oversee any other problems that might arise.
Peer-to-peer car sharing has many prospects. You own a pick-up that rarely gets used. Well, now you can make some money off of it by sharing it with families that need to haul on occasion. Or say you own an EV for short commutes and around town errands but you need to make a trip that will exceed its range. Now you can borrow a car for the trip for a reasonable rate.
With car demands getting met easier, there will be fewer cars on the roads. And with the current state of mobile technology, it is a service that will be user friendly and readily accessible. It has the potential to reshape our attitudes about driving.
Getaround enables car owners to safely rent out their underutilized cars to a community of trusted drivers. People in need of a car can rent one by the hour using the Getaround website or iPhone app.
Motorshare is a car sharing business that will focus on bringing together a community by focusing on the needs of the individuals in a neighborhood and by making car sharing a user-friendly process. With the help of the “Motorbrain,” a small computer device installed in the car by Motorshare, only recognized members can enter and use the car. Currently in beta testing.
