Exhaust System

The exhaust system of a vehicle is a network of pipes and certain devices that carries burned toxic gases away from the engine and the persons occupying the vehicle. It also converts those toxic gases into non-toxic substances. In addition, the exhaust system of your vehicle can also increase horsepower while improving gas mileage. Pretty important. We know.

Now, we don’t want to bore you with a bunch of useless knowledge, but we think it’s important you know how your exhaust system works.

The beginning of the journey for your exhaust is the exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold is directly next to the engine, and is extremely hot so it will burn any excess gasoline that was not burned in the combustion chamber. Next, the gases are funneled through a pipe to the vehicle’s catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is one of the most important devices on your exhaust system. It takes all the noxious fumes that come from the manifold, and burns them even further converting them into non-toxic substances, helping to save our environment. After that comes the muffler and tailpipe which reduce the noise of the engine and direct the rest of the exhaust away from the vehicle.

There are also aftermarket devices available that attach to the end of your tailpipe and even further reduce CO2 emissions and toxic particulate from being emitted into our surroundings. These devices will fit a variety of passenger vehicles, light trucks and SUVs.

A carefully designed exhaust system with a well maintained catalytic converter can greatly increase performance and gas mileage, as well as decrease the amount of toxic gases being dumped into our environment. We think this is a good thing.

Next time your car is in the shop for a tune-up, have your mechanic take a look at your catalytic converter to make sure it’s up to snuff. It’ll save you money and save the environment at the same time.
